Trans Day of Visibility: Nonbinary Visibility Panel

Gender Sexuality Info, LLC proudly hosted a free, one-hour panel with 3 nonbinary folks across the United States. You'll hear their stories and live audience members had an opportunity to ask questions.

Trans Day of Visibility (TDOV)

Transgender Day of Visibility falls on March 31st every year since it was first created by Rachel Crandall in 2009. It's a day of empowerment and recognition!

There are a few things to highlight:

  1. Not everyone who is nonbinary also claims the term, community, or identity transgender. Everyone has their own definitions of these.

  2. Not all trans people can be visible. Some are who don’t want to be. There are those who choose to be private or stealth for any reason. Some live in locations that it may bring them harm. Some people don’t use the term transgender to describe themselves anymore because they feel their transition journey is complete, which may be a combination of medical, legal, and social changes. There are also folks who detransition. People who want access to gender-affirming medical care and people who don’t/can’t for financial, safety, or health reasons and beyond. All of these experiences are valid and held. We don’t have to understand them to respect them.

  3. If you are also transgender and/or nonbinary or think you might be and don’t see yourself in this event, that does not make you any less valid.

Where to watch the replay

The broadcast streamed live across YouTube, Facebook, LinkedIn, and is now also available on Spotify as a special video podcast episode.

Accommodations: ASL interpretation and English (US) captioning.

Unfortunately, LinkedIn will only allow auto-generated captioning and not an updated SRT file for the broadcasted video. The auto-generated captioning has been left on. Proper captioning is critical for folks such as those who are deaf, hard of hearing, and neurodivergent and GSI apologizes that the experience is less than ideal due to technical limitations for LinkedIn viewers.

Zoa and Chris Angel wore apparel from MegEmikoArt and Maze from Transcend Apparel, which seems to have closed down. This is not an advertisement and the companies did not sponsor us for this event; we merely wanted to support small LGBTQ+-owned businesses.

Thank you

Friends, I am floored. With all of the TDOV events this year, I wasn't sure how well the panel would do. What a wonderful problem to have! However, SO MANY PEOPLE CAME THROUGH! Please see some of the many responses above. This was my first time hosting an online panel and I could not have done it without:

The panelists Zoa Glows (she/they/he), Maze Felix (they/them), and Noel Fernando (they/them) for sharing their stories, wisdom, and vulnerability overall. Most importantly, for trusting me enough to say yes. I am 1,000% certain people were touched in ways we may never know. I know I will not always be safer for everyone, though I will always work toward it. Thank you for the immense privilege of amplifying your voices, stories, and platforms <3

Shout out to Zoa for being a brilliant reel-making human that no doubt got so many people hyped, including all of us involved! And for Maze and Noel jumping in to make that reel happen.

Rebecca Minor (website, instagram) is one of the BEST hype people and hit up countless LGBTQ+ and related accounts to help spread the word. I'm grateful to have found our friendship. Thank you for saying yes to meeting with me and look at how quickly it spiraled into us running an event together?! She helped with so many pieces of it, including helping with the tech during the live <3

Emy Rothenberger for COMING THROUGH at the last minute when all of my attempts to secure an ASL interpreter failed for the past several weeks. AND for introducing me to another one who will be hopefully joining me in future work <3 AND for donating her time?!?! Thank you to Noel for the original connection and everyone else who banded together to help make it happen.

One of the moments that choked me up the most was seeing so many people from my lifespan show up. People I've grown up with, worked with, volunteered with, people who listen to my podcast and/or hype up my work and beyond. I was incredibly choked up and y'all were so kind until I could get my nerves under control. Truly, I am so lucky <3

All attendees and
donors, THANK YOU!

Thanks to your overwhelming generosity, I was able to run this event for free so that more folks could access it, including our youth who need us so much right now <3 The donations are divided amongst the panelists in order to honor them for their emotional labor. Please, always pay your panelists and speakers!

Thank you, thank you, thank you and here's to more future events!

Warmly,

Chris Angel Murphy, MSW (they/them) - Founder of GSI
